"It's a blessing to welcome a child, but the reality of parenthood can be daunting, especially when the birth is difficult," De Kleijn shared. "Céline's recovery was slow, and as first-time parents, we navigated uncharted territory."

However, the most traumatic event occurred when De Kleijn was assaulted during a training ride. The incident, triggered by a group of teenagers hurling abusive language, including a reference to the disease that claimed his father's life, left a deep scar. De Kleijn's attempt to reason with the group only escalated the situation, resulting in a physical attack that broke his nose.
"The lack of respect and empathy displayed by these youths is alarming," De Kleijn reflected. "It's a sad reflection of a society where basic human decency seems to be eroding."
Justice and Recovery
Fortunately, bystanders intervened, and most of the assailants were apprehended. While the trial process may take time, De Kleijn takes solace in the fact that justice is on its way. Physically, he has also healed from the shoulder injury sustained during the UAE Tour, undergoing corrective surgery that has finally relieved him of the pain.
"The road to recovery has been long and arduous, both physically and mentally," De Kleijn admitted. "But I'm grateful for the support of my team, family, and friends who stood by me during this challenging period."
Returning to the Race
De Kleijn's return to racing at the Rund um Köln marks a new chapter. He expressed his eagerness to reconnect with the adrenaline of sprinting and the camaraderie of his team. With a series of races lined up, including the 4 Jours de Dunkerque and semi-Classics in Belgium, De Kleijn is determined to reclaim his competitive edge.
"I'm hungry for victory, not just for myself but for everyone who has supported me through these trying times," he said. "Racing is my passion, and I'm eager to showcase my skills once again."
